Snake
Palace is a place that is familiar to domestic and foreign tourists. Snake
Palace is a large cave filled with various types of snakes of various colors
and sizes. The distance from Labuan Bajo City to the Snake Palace is around 75
km and can be reached in 2 hours from Labuan Bajo City. To get to this palace,
visitors need approximately two and a half hours by four-wheeled vehicle. From
the center of Galang Village about 3.5 km and from Weto village to the mouth of
the cave approximately 500 m.
The
history of the snake palace is closely related to the story of a family that
had a son and a daughter. In ancient times, they lived together like children
in a family, but their togetherness was no longer like a relationship between
siblings, like other children, but they had forbidden relations, that is,
husband and wife relations which were actually not suitable for younger
brothers and sisters. Manggarai people call jurak marriage.
Because
they had done something that violated customs and culture, their parents
tortured them and kicked them out of the village where they lived. Several
years later their parents were shocked because both of them had changed shape,
namely into snakes. I don't know what the signs are that it's their child, what
they definitely feel is that it's their two biological children. The snake,
which is considered to be his biological child, lives in a large cave called
the snake palace. Snake Palace is considered a palace for his biological
children.
Anyone
who wants to enter this snake palace cave, begins with a traditional ritual.
Traditional rituals are usually carried out by local traditional elders. The
traditional ritual carried out is in the form of "teing tuak". During
the traditional procession, the means of "Teing Tuak" is a free-range
chicken egg.
